I started this with my usual base — all that vertical texture, the neutrals, the worn-in surface. I know how to build that part. But this time I wanted to push it somewhere else.
So I brought in the turquoise. I laid down that band at the bottom and stepped back. It changed everything, and I knew I had to respond. Orange went in next, then that bright green. I wasn’t guessing. I’d put a color down, take two steps back, and see what the piece was asking for. If it felt heavy, I added light. If it felt flat, I added contrast.
It was different for me. More playful, less serious. I was just letting myself make different choices.
I was happier than I expected. It’s one of my favourites because it still feels like a day when I let more colour in.
